Prep and preheat
- Preheat the oven to 350F and grease a 9x13 baking pan.
- Whisk the all-purpose flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt together until evenly combined.
Make the batter
- Whisk the melted unsalted butter and both sugars until smooth and glossy.
- Whisk in the eggs and vanilla extract and mix until the batter looks fully combined.
- Fold in the flour mixture until just combined, stopping as soon as no dry streaks remain.
- Fold in the finely diced apples and walnuts or pecans if using.
Bake and finish
- Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes at 350F until a toothpick comes out with just a few moist crumbs.
- Cool in the pan before slicing into squares.
- Drizzle with caramel sauce before cutting into squares.
Notes
For clean slices, cool the brownies in the pan until they’re set, then cut with a sharp knife. Store covered in the fridge up to 4 days; freezer yes—freeze individual squares up to 2 months. For a lighter option, use half the brown sugar (0.25 cup) and rely on the apples’ natural sweetness.
