Ingredients

Dry ingredients
  • 1.5 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg
  • 0.25 tsp salt
Wet ingredients and batter
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar packed
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cup apples peeled and finely diced
Optional add-ins
  • 0.5 cup walnuts or pecans chopped
Caramel drizzle
  • 0.25 cup caramel sauce

Equipment

  • 1 sheet pan

Method

Prep and preheat
  1. Preheat the oven to 350F and grease a 9x13 baking pan.
  2. Whisk the all-purpose flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt together until evenly combined.
Make the batter
  1. Whisk the melted unsalted butter and both sugars until smooth and glossy.
  2. Whisk in the eggs and vanilla extract and mix until the batter looks fully combined.
  3. Fold in the flour mixture until just combined, stopping as soon as no dry streaks remain.
  4. Fold in the finely diced apples and walnuts or pecans if using.
Bake and finish
  1. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan.
  2. Bake for 30-35 minutes at 350F until a toothpick comes out with just a few moist crumbs.
  3. Cool in the pan before slicing into squares.
  4. Drizzle with caramel sauce before cutting into squares.

Notes

For clean slices, cool the brownies in the pan until they’re set, then cut with a sharp knife. Store covered in the fridge up to 4 days; freezer yes—freeze individual squares up to 2 months. For a lighter option, use half the brown sugar (0.25 cup) and rely on the apples’ natural sweetness.
