Ingredients

Cranberry sauce base
  • 12 oz fresh cranberries
  • 1.75 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 Granny Smith apple
  • 1 orange
  • 1 lemon
  • 0.5 cup golden raisins
  • 0.5 cup walnuts or pecans Toast and chop before using.

Equipment

  • 1 cast iron skillet

Method

Simmer until skins pop
  1. In a saucepan over medium-high heat, bring fresh cranberries, sugar, and water to a boil. Simmer for 5 minutes until the skins pop and the mixture looks glossy.
Simmer with fruit and zest
  1. Stir in the diced Granny Smith apple, orange zest, orange juice, lemon zest, and lemon juice. Simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly around the fruit.
Stir in add-ins
  1. Remove the saucepan from the heat, then stir in golden raisins and toasted chopped walnuts or pecans. Mix until evenly distributed and the sauce looks chunky.
Cool and refrigerate
  1. Cool completely, then cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Refrigerate for up to 1 week for best flavor and set texture.
Serve
  1. Serve chilled or at room temperature with a spoonable, chunky texture. Stir once if needed before serving.

Notes

For the best set, cool the sauce fully before refrigerating; it thickens as it chills. Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Freezing is not recommended because the fruit texture can soften when thawed. If you need a lower-sugar version, replace the sugar with a 1:1 baking sugar alternative and cook the same way.
