Equipment

  • 1 slow cooker

Method

Make the apple filling
  1. Toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice, then spread them in the slow cooker.
  2. Cover and set up the lid for reduced condensation by placing a folded kitchen towel or several paper towels under the slow cooker lid.
Make the oat crumble topping
  1. Combine rolled oats, all-purpose flour, packed brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl.
  2. Drizzle the melted unsalted butter over the oat mixture and toss until evenly moistened and clumps form.
  3. Scatter the crumble evenly over the apples.
Cook and finish
  1. Cook on Low for 2.5–3 hours until the apples are tender and the topping is set.
  2. For a crispier result, broil for 3–4 minutes after cooking, watching closely to avoid burning.
Serve
  1. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream and drizzle caramel sauce over the top.

Notes

Pro tip: using a folded kitchen towel or paper towels under the slow cooker lid helps catch condensation, giving you a less soggy oat topping. Refrigerate leftovers up to 3 days in a covered container; reheat individual portions in the microwave. Freezing is not recommended because the crumble can soften after thawing. Dietary swap: for a gluten-free version, use a 1:1 gluten-free all-purpose flour blend in the topping.
