Ingredients

canned cut green beans, drained
  • 4 can (14.5 oz each) cut green beans, drained Drain well so the sauce can cling to the beans.
bacon
  • 8 bacon, chopped Chop before cooking so it crisps evenly.
onion
  • 0.5 small small onion, diced Dice small for even sweet-savory flavor.
brown sugar butter sauce
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar, packed Pack the sugar for a thick, glossy sauce.
  • 0.25 cup butter, melted Use melted butter for easy mixing.
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce Adds savory depth.
  • 1 tsp garlic powder Distributes evenly in the sauce.
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper Freshly ground if possible.

Equipment

  • 1 cast iron skillet
  • 1 sheet pan

Method

Prep and preheat
  1. Preheat the oven to 350F. Set up a 9x13-inch baking dish so you can layer the beans and sauce quickly.
Cook bacon and onion
  1. Cook the chopped bacon and diced onion in a skillet for 8 minutes over heat until the bacon is mostly crisp, stirring occasionally. Keep the drippings in the skillet and do not drain.
Assemble and bake
  1. Place the drained cut green beans in a 9x13-inch baking dish, then top with the bacon, onion, and all skillet drippings. Spread into an even layer so the sauce coats all sides.
  2. Whisk the packed brown sugar, melted butter, soy sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper until smooth. Pour the mixture over the beans so it pools around them.
  3. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 35-40 minutes at 350F, stirring once partway through. Look for a glossy sauce as the beans become tender and saucy.
Serve
  1. Stir the beans and serve warm. The sauce should look thick and shiny as it clings to the green beans.

Notes

Pro tip: pack the brown sugar and whisk until fully smooth so the sauce turns glossy instead of grainy. Refrigerate leftovers in a covered container for up to 4 days; reheat gently in the oven or microwave until hot. Freezing is not recommended because canned beans can soften further after thawing. For a lower-sodium option, use reduced-sodium soy sauce and keep the rest the same.
